USAPat*

Getting Started

From the main menu of the USPTO workstation, click on Patent Information, then click on USAPat.

When the gray screen appears, click on continue.

A list of patent numbers and associated USAPat volume id numbers will display in the Cumulative Index box on the left side of the screen.

Selecting Patents

Click in the search box, then type the number of the patent you wish to view (without commas, i.e. 5458765). That number will now be highlighted.

Double click on the highlighted line to move it to the Documents Found box on the right. (Or highlight the desired number and click on the right arrow between the two boxes.)

Repeat this step until you have a complete list of the patents you wish to view.

To remove a patent from the list, highlight it, and click on the left arrow between the two boxes.

Viewing the Patents

Highlight the patent number(s) from the list in the Documents Found box on the right, then click on OK.

A message will display the disk number (i.e. US_95_42B).

Locate the disk in the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Cabinet next to the workstation. The disks are arranged numerically.

Insert the disk, print side up, in the DVD-ROM drive on the CPU tower. Look for the label Use this drive - F, which is also marked with orange dots. Do not use the e: drive, which is labeled do not use.

Wait 10 seconds or so, then click on OK. It may be necessary to click on OK two or three times before the program loads. The first page of the first patent will display.

Working with the Patent(s)

To zoom in on a patent (make it larger), hold down the shift button and press the +. It will enlarge in 25% increments, but zooming will not always make the patent more readable. Pressing the - will zoom down. (You cannot zoom lower than 100%.)

The page down key will take you directly to the next page, or the down arrow will take you through the document line by line. Use the arrow keys to navigate through the document.

To print the patent, press p. A pop-up menu will show you how many pages are contained in the patent, and will prompt you to print the entire document or just the page that is displayed.

Type d to print the displayed page, or a to print all of the pages. It will print at 100%, even if the page you are displaying is zoomed in or zoomed out.

Press esc to cancel printing.

To exit USAPat and return to the main menu, press the esc key two times. When the message appears, press enter to return to the main menu.

* This system will not permit patent searching. Patent searching by keyword, class and subclass, or company name/assignee, is available through CASSIS BIB, a file on the USPTO Patent workstation. Prepare a list of patent numbers which have been issued between 1790 - 1970, or 1994 - date. You may also want to note the USAPat disc id number, which is listed in CASSIS BIB. In Additional, patents (from 1973 - 1999) are available in microfilm in the Reserves Room on Level 2. All patents begining from 1790 are available on the United States Patent and Trademark home page.
