Turabian Style Guide

What is it?

Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 6th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996.

Where can I find a copy?

  • Cooper Library Reference Desk

Who should use it?

  • Students whose professors require Turabian

  • Undergraduates in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences

Note: Turabian is designed to complement the Chicago Manual of Style but is simpler and easier for undergraduates to use.

How to cite works in the body of your paper using the Turabian style:

Turabian style uses footnotes to cite quotes, paraphrases, etc., within the text of your paper.

Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page, numbered with the numerals written in superscript (11Mark Twain).

Note that when using footnotes, the first line of the citation is indented 5 spaces.

Endnotes are listed at the end of the paper, preceded by a regular typed numeral, followed by a period (1. Twain, Mark).

For examples, see Duke University Libraries' Turabian Footnotes.

How to cite works in the Bibliography at the end of your paper using Turabian:

Turabian style includes a complete list of all works cited in the bibliography at the end of the paper.  Each footnote in the text should refer to a work in the bibliography.

Each kind of work is cited in its own way; for details, see the Duke University Libraries' Assembling a List of Works Cited.
