Reference Services

Reference Desk

Special Collections provides reference service at the Reference Desk in the Reading Room, located on the lower level of the Strom Thurmond Institute Building, during the Unit's hours of operation. Staff will assist the patron with using the Online Catalog and the collection finding aids, in identifying material of interest and answering questions about holdings and services.

Hours

E-Mail, Fax, Postal and Telephone Reference

Special Collections offers email, fax, postal and telephone reference assistance to patrons inquiring about its services or collections only. Generally, staff will spend an hour attempting to answer reference questions using the collections in the Unit; if a research visit is indicated the patron will be so informed. Unit staff do not do research, but can assist the patron in finding students who are willing to do the research for a fee (to be negotiated between the patron and the student).

They include general information about the collections, services and programs of the Unit, a glimpse of some of the items in the collections and a tour of the facilities. University Historic Objects Program

University Historic Objects Program

In 1996 the Board of Trustees gave Special Collections the responsibility of identifying, inventorying and preserving historic objects belonging to the University both on and off-campus; the Unit is assisted in this task by the University's Heritage Advisory Committee. Historic objects are defined as

. . . a three-dimensional item, excluding documents and photographs, which has a specific connection to the unique history of Clemson University. It may be associated with individuals significant in the development of the University, represent the traditions of daily life at the University or mark a momentous event in the history of the University.

A "historic object" also may include items which have significant cultural, artistic, historical, monetary or association value but which are not specifically related to Clemson University's unique history if those items were used at the University or are associated with University alumni. These items will be listed on the campus inventory at the discretion of the Heritage Advisory Committee.

Please contact Jim Cross at (864) 656-5182, jcross@clemson.edu or Susan Hiott at (864) 656-0665, hiotts@clemson.edu if you have a historic object that needs to be added to the inventory or if you have any questions concerning historic objects.
