Special
Collections in the Library Catalog
Links to other archives and manuscript repositories Special Collections in the Library CatalogThe collection-level records in the Catalog provide a complete description for most manuscript collections. Some of the larger manuscript collections have both collection-level and series (filing subdivision)-level records. These larger manuscript collections and University Archives series are more extensively described in paper finding aids available in the Special Collections Reading Room, as are accession number manuscript collections (which are not in the Library Catalog). Important note: The subjects and names mentioned in the collection/series descriptions and used as headings in the Library Catalog are meant to indicate some of the subject areas and individuals of interest in the collections/series. They are not an exhaustive list of all the possible subjects and persons that may be found in the collection or series described. Bottom of Page | Online Catalog (Direct link to Libraries

It provides information on final drafts or record copies of speeches-- given by Thurmond when he was South Carolina State Senator, Governor of South Carolina, and United States Senator--contained in the General File subseries of the Strom Thurmond Collection's Speeches series. It is also an index to information on various political campaigns which Thurmond ran or supported, especially his 1954 write-in and 1948 States' Rights campaigns, and Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. Web) What is a Finding Aid?A finding aid is a descriptive tool produced by an archives in order to establish physical and/or intellectual control over archival materials. While the records describing the University Archives series and manuscript collections in the online catalog are a form of finding aid, the sense in which it is being used here is as a tool which gives detailed descriptions of archival materials. The major difference between archival description and library cataloging is that a catalog entry usually describes a single item, while a finding aid usually describes an entire collection of items. The most common forms of finding aids used in Special Collections are registers, which describe manuscript collections and usually consist of an introduction, biographical or organizational history note, scope and content note, series descriptions (series are file units kept together because of a relationship arising out of their creation, receipt or use) and a folder-title listing; University Archives series descriptions, which include a biographical or organizational history note and a folder-title listing in addition to the series description itself; and lists.
