Special Collections Services |
Reference ServicesReference DeskSpecial Collections provides reference service at the Reference Desk in the Reading Room, located on the lower level of the Strom Thurmond Institute Building, during the Unit's hours of operation. Staff will assist the patron with using the Online Catalog and the collection finding aids, in identifying material of interest and answering questions about holdings and services. E-Mail, Fax, Postal and Telephone ReferenceSpecial Collections offers email, fax, postal and telephone reference assistance to patrons inquiring about its services or collections only. Generally, staff will spend an hour attempting to answer reference questions using the collections in the Unit; if a research visit is indicated the patron will be so informed. Unit staff do not do research, but can assist the patron in finding students who are willing to do the research for a fee (to be negotiated between the patron and the student). Research ConsultationsSpecial Collections provides consultations to researchers
interested in using its unique materials; call (864) 656-3031 to
set up a meeting with one of the archivists. A consultation can
include the formulation of a paper/thesis/dissertation topic
based on the Unit's holdings, instruction in using the collection
finding aids effectively and assistance in identifying material
at other institutions that can be used to research the topic
chosen. Tours and Group OrientationsSpecial Collections conducts tours for University classes and outside groups. They include general information about the collections, services and programs of the Unit, a glimpse of some of the items in the collections and a tour of the facilities. Class tours also include instruction on how to use the collections effectively. Tours can be arranged by calling (864) 656-3031. The material that can be duplicated includes papers, photographs, slides, video and audio. Unit staff undertakes the photocopying of material and may scan material if the patron so chooses; all other items are handled by the University's Communication Center. Patrons may bring in their own photocopier, scanner, or camera to duplicate material under the supervision of the Special Collections staff. All photographs are sent off-campus to commercial vendors for processing; please allow a minimum of four weeks. Audio, video and microfilm orders may take longer. Prices are listed below. For video tapes, audio tapes, and microfilm please contact Special Collections for pricing information. Orders can be picked up at the Reference Desk in Special Collections or they can be mailed, faxed or electronically transferred to the patron. Orders sent by mail, electronically transferred or faxed must be paid in advance by check (made out to "Clemson University"). For mail orders a postage and handling fee is added to the total cost of the order; see price sheets for details. Special Collections staff will contact the patron with the total cost of the order, including any applicable postage and handling fees.
