Directions

From I-85

  • Get off at Exit 19B, U.S. 76 West towards Clemson (not East towards Anderson)
  • Stay on U.S. 76 for approximately 11 miles, passing through seven traffic lights
  • Pass SC 28 and National Guard Armory on right
  • Turn left onto Silas N. Pearman Blvd. (Perimeter Road) at the traffic light immediately after SC 28 and the Armory (there is also a sign directing visitors to State Botanical Gardens at the intersection)
  • Pass fire station and the Gardens
  • Pass through traffic light at the intersection of Silas N. Pearman Blvd. (Perimeter Road) and Cherry Road
  • Turn right onto access road with sign for Strom Thurmond Institute; the Institute building is at the end of the road, approximately 200 yards from the road's entrance
  • Special Collections is on the lower level

From US 123

  • Turn onto US 76 East at the traffic light (there is a Ramada Inn at one corner and a Comfort Inn almost exactly across from it)
  • Go under an overpass (for SC 93)
  • Turn right onto Silas N. Pearman Blvd. (Perimeter Road) at the traffic light immediately after the overpass
  • Pass fire station and the State Botanical Gardens.
  • Pass through traffic light at the intersection of Silas N. Pearman Blvd. (Perimeter Road) and Cherry Road
  • Turn right onto access road with sign for Strom Thurmond Institute; the Institute building is at the end of the road, approximately 200 yards from the road's entrance
  • Special Collections is on the lower level

Parking

There are parking spaces along the access road to the Strom Thurmond Institute Building and a few visitors and disabled parking spaces are available in the small lot adjacent to the building. Visitors need to get a parking pass, which can be picked up at the Reference Desk in the Special Collections Reading Room on the lower level of the Institute.

Rules for Using Special Collections

Special Collections contains material for use by students, faculty, scholars and the general public. We ask researchers to fill out a registration form prior to using the collections. The use of these materials is freely granted subject to any restrictions on their use and compliance with the following rules:

I. Rules that pertain to researchers using collections in the Reading Room at Clemson

  • Researchers must sign the register each day when entering. Coats, handbags, briefcases, backpacks, etc. are to be hung on the coat rack, left at the Reference Desk, or placed in a locker. The researcher may take note paper or similar research-related tools (typewriter, camera, computer) to a table in the research area. These items may be checked by the staff before the researcher leaves.
  • Only pencils may be used in the Reading Room. Ink pens of any type are prohibited.
  • No food, drink or tobacco are allowed in the Reading Room.
  • Materials in Special Collections cannot be checked out. Material may not be taken outside of Special Collections or any other work area designated for the use of archives and manuscripts without the permission of a the Head of Special Collections. The researcher must treat the material with care during use; it must not be leaned upon, marked, folded, traced over, or otherwise handled in any way likely to cause damage. The existing order of the materials must be preserved. Items to be copied or scanned should be left in order in their folder with a marker identifying where they are located.
  • Fifteen minutes before closing, materials being used should be returned to the Reference Desk, and no further items will be paged.
  • Persons apprehended stealing documents will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law (S.C. Code 16-13-330, 16-13-331, 16-13-332).
  • When requesting materials to be copied or scanned, the "Photoduplicating Form", the "Photographs Request Form" or the "Scanning Request Form" should be completed, signed, and returned to the Reference Desk. Members of Special Collections will handle the actual copying or scanning of the material.


II. Rules that pertain to researchers who are making research requests by mail, telephone, fax or e-mail

  • Materials in Special Collections cannot be lent via interlibrary loan.


III. Rules that pertain to ALL researchers

  • Special Collections material is protected by copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code). The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming to the laws of libel and literary property rights which may be involved in his or her use of manuscripts or other records. With the exception of brief extracts, written permission to publish or mount on a WWW site/the Internet any unpublished material from the Unit's archival holdings must be secured from Special Collections, Clemson University Libraries. The University Libraries does not, by granting this permission, relinquish its own right to publish the material or to permit other persons to publish or quote therefrom.
  • The researcher is further cautioned that neither the University Libraries' exclusive ownership of the collection nor authorization to publish material in the collection constitutes a conveyance of those literary rights not held by Clemson University. The applicant assumes full responsibility for any infringement of copyright or publication rights belonging to the author, his or her heirs, or assigns.
  • If access to a collection or portion of a collection is restricted, the researcher must have written permission from the donor to use the collection or any part of the collection. If permission is obtained from the donor, the original copy shall be given to Special Collections for permanent filing. Permission to copy or scan material under restriction must be specifically obtained.
  • Photocopies and scanned images are made available solely for the reference use of the applicant. Duplication of these copies or images is prohibited.
  • In citing materials from manuscript collections and the University Archives, the form should be the following: (after identification of the item, folder and box number, and title of the collection), Special Collections, Clemson University Libraries, Clemson, South Carolina.
  • The University Libraries reserves the right to refuse the use or duplication of any material. Also it may prohibit the further use of a collection by a researcher for failure to comply with the above stated rules.
