A is for available, B is for books, C is for compact shelving.

The books are missing from the shelves, but you can still find them. They have been moved so we can begin our compact shelving project!

Here’s the latest on what’s happening in the A call numbers on the 1st floor. Books and journals on the first six rows have been removed and placed on carts in Room 108.

The carts are numbered 1 through 15. Call numbers beginning “AC1” through call numbers “AP2.K37” are on these carts and will remain on them until the first week of September when they will be placed on the new compact shelves.

Compact Shelving Coming to Cooper

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Work began July 29 to install compact shelving on the first floor of Cooper Library.

Compact shelving is shelving designed so rows can be moved next to each other with no aisle in between when those rows are not in use. If you need to get a book from one of the “compacted” shelves, you use a crank to easily slide the shelves apart. Using this kind of shelving means the first floor can hold twice as many items as it does now, opening up more space on other floors.

The project will also include the installation of brighter more energy-efficient lighting and new carpeting on the first floor.
During the installation, you’ll still be able to get to materials on the first floor, though there may be times when you’ll need to ask library staff to retrieve what you need.

The project should be completed by the end of the fall semester. Noise from the construction should be limited to the first floor.
When the installation is complete, books and bound journals with the call numbers A-P will be located on the first floor. If you have ideas about what the Library should do with the newly opened space, we’d love to hear them.
