What is a Copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) to the authors of original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. Section 106 of the Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

 Reproduce the copyrighted work

To prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work

To distribute copies of the copyrighted work

To perform the copyrighted work publicly

To display the copyrighted work publicly

This definition was taken from Copyright Basics (Circular 1), a brochure published by the U.S. Copyright Office.

The Copyright Collection

As a Depository Library for federal government information, we receive information and publications from the Copyright Office. These materials are shelved in the Government Documents collection on Level 3 of R.M. Cooper Library.

Our collection also includes books about what is covered by copyrights, how to search for copyright information, and how to apply for a copyright. Some of these books are available to borrow. South Carolina residents may apply for a courtesy borrower's card to check out books for two weeks. The cost of this card is $10.00 for the first year, with a $7.00 annual renewal charge.

Copyright Searches

The records of the Copyright Office are open for inspection and searching by the public. Files from 1978 to the present can can be searched electronically at the Library of Congress Web Page.
In addition, on request, the Copyright Office will search its records at the statutory rate of $20 for each hour or fraction of an hour. For information on searching the Office records concerning the copyright status or ownership of a work, request Circulars 22 and 23.
