Note:  This program does not permit patent application searching.  It is designed as a document delivery tool to display and/or print patent applications that have been identified in a previous patent application search.  See handout on Searching the Patent Application Full-Text Database for information on patent application searching.

Selecting / Viewing Patents

  • From the main menu of the Cassis workstation, click on Patent Information.
  • Then click on USAApp.

When the gray screen appears:

  • click on the Continue button.
A list of patent numbers and associated USAPat volume id numbers will display in the Cumulative Index box on the left side of the screen.

  • Click in the search box, then type the number of the patent application you wish to view (with the 4-digit date, but without commas - i.e. 20010000044.)  That number will now be highlighted.

  • Double click on the highlighted line to move it to the Documents Found box on the right side of the screen.  Or highlight the desired number and click on the right arrow between the two boxes. To remove a patent application from the list, highlight it, then click on the left arrow between the two boxes.
  • Repeat these steps until you have a complete list of the patent applications you wish to view.
  • Highlight the patent application number(s) from the list in the Documents Found box on the right, then click on the OK button.
  • A message will display the disk number (i.e. USA W41).  If you have chosen more than one document, it will display the disk number of the first patent application in the list.
  • Locate the disk in the CD-ROM / DVD-ROM Cabinet next to the workstation.  The disks are arranged numerically.

  • Insert the disk, print side up, in the DVD-ROM drive on the CPU tower.  Look for the drive that is labeled Use this drive - F, which is also marked with orange dots.  Do NOT use the e: drive, which is labeled do not use.
  • Wait 10 seconds or so, then click on OK.  It may be necessary to click on OK several more times before the program loads.  The first page of the selected patent application (or the first page of the first patent application in the list) will display.

Working with the Documents

  • Click on the right arrow 4 to go to the next page of the selected patent.  The 4 will take you to the last page of the selected patent.
Once you are viewing a patent, the pointing hand icon will open a menu allowing you to jump to a particular page.
  • Click on the down arrow 6to go to the next patent document in the list.  The 6 will take you to the last document in the list.
  • Click on the icon of the magnifying glass with a  + inside to zoom in on a patent to make it larger. The patent will enlarge in 25% increments, but zooming will not always make the patent more readable.
  • Click on the icon of the magnifying glass with a - inside to zoom back down.
Note: patents will print at 100% regardless of how they appear on the screen.

To Print Patent Applications

There are several printer icons in the top menu bar.
  • To print one patent, click on the printer icon. A pop-up menu will display how many pages are contained in the patent, and will prompt you to print the entire document, just the first page, or all pages but the first page.A menu will display allowing you to choose to print the entire document, or a portion of it.  Highlight the proper response and click on the okay button. (Press esc to cancel printing.)

  • To print more than one patent, you must first make a print patent list.  To add a patent to the print list, while you are viewing the patent, click on the + printer  icon.  When you are finished viewing patent applications and wish to print the ones you have marked, pull down the file menu, then highlight batch process, then click on the batch print button.  This will print all the patent applications in the list.
The document will print at 100% even if the page you are displaying is zoomed in or out.

To Return

  • Click on the open hand icon (find a document) to return to the search screen. Or you can pull down the Documents menu, and highlight find.
  • To exit USAPat and return to the main menu, press the esc key two times.  When the message appears, press enter to return to the main menu
