July 24 , 2008 Update
HVAC
Work is continuing in the mechanical room on the 6th floor. At times you may hear something that sounds like something heavy being rolled across the roof, that's because something heavy is being rolled across the roof. Pieces of new equipment are being raised to roof and then placed in the "penthouse."
Network Wiring
Work is continuing on the 3rd and 4th floors. There are still lots of workers on ladders in various places. Work has also begun on the 1st and 2nd floors, so noise may be an issue for a little while.
When they are all finished, the library will have all new, additional, really fast network connections. Yay!
May 1, 2008 Update
A wiring project will begin on Monday, May 5 on the 3rd floor. This project will continue on other floors and should be completed before classes begin in August. This project will add network connections.
The balcony will not reopen until just before classes begin in August.
It will be extremely noisy in late May. Equipment in the 6th floor mechanical room must be dismantled.
April 24, 2008 Update
Quiet week begins today at 5:30pm for exams. HVAC guys will be gone for 3 weeks while some other work is done in the library.
April 10, 2008 Update
The wiring upgrade has begun. A closet is being added on the 4th floor. We will have a quiet week for exams. No work will go on during that time.
Power poles with electrical outlets have been added on the 6th floor. This was done because the tables were pulled away from the existing outlets because of the temporary HVAC units.
April 1 , 2008 Update
The 3rd floor of Cooper Library is open. Staff have moved back into their offices. Some furniture still needs to be rearranged. It could be warm on this floor until the testing and balancing of the new system is completed.
The Academic Success Center has moved back into their offices on the 3rd floor.
The balcony closed on March 28 and will not re-open until sometime in July. The doors now have air handlers attached to them. The air handlers will cool floors 4, 5, and 6 this summer while the HVAC project is completed.

March 5 , 2008 Update
The drilling noise could continue all day. We were not made aware that this would be going on today. We apologize for any inconvenience.
March 3 , 2008 Update
The third floor of Cooper Library will be re-opening the week of March 24, 2008.
Before moving in the floor will be checked to determine the cleaning needs. The construction crew has worked very hard to finish this phase and we are very grateful to be moving back in early.
Please remember that even though the floor is open, the work isn't 100% finished. A testing & balancing crew will be working on the floor to check the system. There may be hot and cold spots until this work is completed.
January 24, 2008 Update
First and second floors have not been cleaned yet, but they are open to the public. The study rooms will be cleaned first.
There are still some "hot spots" on in the building as well as temperature fluctuations. The system is still undergoing testing and balancing.
Because the work is now on the third floor, the noise is more noticable on floors 4, 5, and 6. We apologize for any inconvenience.
January 10, 2008 Update
Cleaning of the 1st and 2nd floors will begin as soon as construction has been completed. The Binding room on the 3rd floor will be closed.
January 3, 2008 Update
The 3rd floor has been closed to the public as the HVAC project continues. The 1st and 2nd floors have not been completed. January 14 is the deadline for their completion.
All of the study rooms, conference rooms, meeting rooms, and the 2nd floor classroom are ready for use. Room 107 on the 1st floor is being used as staff offices during this phase of renovation.
December 6 , 2007 Update
The Academic Success Center will be moving to Dillard for spring semester on Monday, December 17. Their phone numbers will remain the same.
The Faculty Senate secretary will be moving to the Strom Thurmond Institute building for spring semester.
The third floor will close on Monday, December 17.
November 15 , 2007 Update
The first and second floors will not be finished on schedule, however work will begin on the third floor as scheduled.
The contractors will cease work on Thursday, December 6 at 7pm and will NOT resume until Monday, December 17 when exams are over.
The third floor will close on Monday, December 17.
November 9 , 2007 Update
The water will be shut off in Cooper Library Saturday night (November 10) after we close at midnight and will remain off until we open at 10am on Sunday (November 11). The shutdown is a necessary part of the HVAC project.
After the water is turned back on, it will probably be cloudy or rusty-looking with noisy pipes and some splashing may occur.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause
November 5 , 2007 Update All study/meeting/conference rooms will be closed until further notice, Monday–Friday from 7:30am until 6:00pm.
The rooms are open and available after 6:00pm.
Room 416 (Brown) is open for use by library employees only, during the day.
This closure involves the following rooms:101, 102, 103, 107, 205, 206, 208, 209, and 210
October 26, 2007 Update
Good news & more good news. Both 1st floor & 2nd floors are OPEN for business. Small areas will be blocked and closed as the contractors work.
The 2nd floor will NOT be closed at this time.
NOISE & disruption & dust will continue to be factors.
The study/meeting/conference rooms are not sound-proof. In some cases there are gaping holes that lead from one room to the next! Those areas should be quieter at night, but noise could still be a factor.
October 10, 2007 Update
The library just received information from the engineers that half of the first floor will be closed for two weeks as of today (10/10/07).
So from 10/10/07-10/24/07, no one except the Circulation staff will have access to books in the call numbers G-K.
Patrons will be abe to request that books be retrieved from this area at the circulation desk, but students and faculty need to stay out of this area for those days.
The HVAC folks will be putting in duct work and it will be dangerous to be in that area during this time.
The second half of the floor (A-F) will be closed from 10/25/07-11/15/07 for the same reasons.
Please let the library staff know if you have any questions.
October 1 , 2007 Update
We apologize for the noise on
lower floors during the day.
Things get a lot quieter after
5:30pm when the construction
crews
stop
work
for the
day.
The
HVAC
construction on the first and
second floors is continuing on
schedule and will be
completed in December.
September 26 , 2007 Update
Construction workers have been working in the conference and meeting rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors. Some meetings had to be moved. The construction foreman assures us we will have more notice if that happens again.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
August 30 , 2007 Update
More work is being done on the 2nd floor. Parts of the L call numbers were covered with plastic. If you need assistance getting something from a covered area, please go to the Circulation Desk and ask for help. They can pull items.

August 2 , 2007 Update
There will be demolition on some old electrical services today. Because Cooper is an old building, they are not sure what areas of the building, if any, they service. Electricity may go off temporarily during the day today.
An electrician will be standing by with the contractor as the work takes place to immediately restore power if something should happen.
Remember to save your work often!
July 30, 2007 Update
If you were in Cooper early this mornign you know the fire alarm went off. Here's what happened; CUFD was called to investigate a report of heavy smoke on the 3rd floor.
The HVAC contractors were using a cutting torch. The air handlers picked up the smoke and pulled it into the building. There is an odor remaining on the 3rd floor.
June 27, 2007 Update
Good news! The first and second floors will NOT be closed completely during the HVAC renovation. The construction company feels they can close off portions and work on them without cutting off access to the whole floor.
You will hear construction noise and feel some temperature changes while everything is going on. Check for updates here, on the Libraries weblog, or on the information kiosk in the lobby of Cooper.
Materials for the project have started to arrive.
May 23, 2007 Update
The Reserves staff have moved out of the Reserves Room on the second floor.
If you are looking for the Reserves staff or looking for materials that have been placed on Reserve, ask for them at the Circulation desk on the 4th floor.
