Library Card

Any resident of South Carolina sixteen years or older can get a borrowing card at the Circulation Desk in Cooper Library or the Architecture Library. The cost of the card is $10 for the first year, $7 for annual renewal or replacement. With the card, community borrowers can check out ten items for a two-week period with renewals.

Expanded privileges are available for $50 annually and patrons can check out twenty items for a four-week period with renewals. Interlibrary loan privileges are available at cost. Clemson employee family members 12 years or older can get a free borrowing card, but are charged for lost cards. Employee must be present for the card to be issued.

All South Carolina public school teachers get a free borrowing card.

Students or faculty members at other South Carolina colleges or universities that participate in the State-wide Reciprocal Borrowing program or the OCLC Reciprocal Borrowing Program can get a free borrowing card from their own institution that can be used to get a free library courtesy card for the Clemson University Libraries.

Checking out items
To find out if the library has a book, journal, CD, DVD, or other item, check the online catalog.
 
Bring items for checkout to the Circulation Desk in Cooper Library or the Architecture Library. Ten books at one time may be checked out. (Faculty or staff with a Statewide Library Borrower's Card may check out twenty at one time.)

Renew Items

You may bring materials to the Circulation Desk in Cooper Library or the Architecture Library for renewal, or just your Library card. It is not necessary to have your books with you to have them renewed! You can also renew your books online through “Your Library Account”. You can log in with your courtesy card number. Only one renewal per check out period allowed.

Fines
Materials Fines
Books 25¢ per item per day
Popular reading materials (books, audiobooks) 25¢ per item per day
Videos and DVDs $1.00 per item per day
Music CDs $1.00 per item per day

You will receive notification via email, if we have an email address on file. If not, you will receive notification of fines by mail. Please notify the library if your address changes by using the change of address form.

If you have questions about Cooper Library materials, fines or fees, please contact the Circulation desk at 864-656-1557. For questions involving Media fines please call the Media desk at 864-656-0402. You may also contact the Architecture desk at 864-656-3933 concerning Architecture Library materials.
Lost or Damaged Items

If you lose or damage a library item, you will be billed the cost of the item ($75 average) plus the overdue fines (25¢ per day per item) and the processing fee ($25). You will receive a bill for any material that is 45 days overdue. If the item is found within six months, you will be reimbursed the fees but not any overdue fines.

If you replace a lost or damaged item, you will only be billed $8 plus any overdue fines. If you have questions about how to replace an item, please contact the Circulation Desk in Cooper Library (864) 656-3027 or the Architecture Library (864) 656-3393.

Outstanding bills are submitted to a collection agency. Additional fees or charges may be assessed.

Can't Find Something?
If an item appears to be missing from the collection, send a Cooper Library Search Request or an Architecture Library Search Request or come by the Circulation Desk. We will search for it and notify you when we find it.
Disclosure

The Confidential Library Records Act (South Carolina Code of Law 60-4-10) that was passed by the South Carolina Legislature and signed by the Governor on May 22, 1985 states that it is unlawful to disclose Library records "which by themselves or when examined with other public records would reveal the identity of the library patron checking out or requesting an item from the library or using other library services..."

However the records of library materials you borrow or use can be disclosed:

  • to persons acting within the scope of their duties in the administration of the library or library system
  • persons authorized, in writing, by the library patron to inspect their personal records
  • in accordance with proper judicial order
  • in compliance with the USA PATRIOT (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Act of 2001 (PL 107-56) regarding terrorist activities
