SciFinder Scholar - Web Version

First-time users must click here to create an account.

STOP! If you are off campus, you must first set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) before the web version of SciFinder Scholar will work for you. Click here for info.

Several methods exist to find information on chemical reactions in SciFinder Scholar:

  1. To find information on a specific class of reactions such as name reactions (Claisen Rearrangement, Diels-Alder, etc.) click the “Explore” (search for scientific information) button then the “Research Topic” button and search for keywords .

  2. If you are looking for reactions involving a particular substance, search for the substance of interest (by molecular formula, by drawing the structure, by chemical name, by CAS number, etc.) and once you have a results list of the substance or substances of interest, you can either click on “Get Reactions” and specify “product”, “reactant”, etc. as needed, or try the “Get References” button and select “References Associated With Preparation.”

  3. If you are searching for an exact reaction, click the “Explore” (search for scientific information) button then the “Reaction Structure” button under “Explore Reactions”. You can graphically draw the reaction of interest then click on “Get Reactions”

Note: SciFinder is still available in a desktop-client version that you can download here (desktop-client version is NOT available off campus).

(Web and desktop-client versions are each limited to 2 simultaneous users )

Online Resources:

Organic Syntheses

Online version of Organic Syntheses (print volumes from v. 1 (1921)-v. 84 (2007) in Hunter Hall Reading Room 2nd Floor - QD 262 .O7) from CambridgeSoft, Wiley, and DataTrace Publishing.

Organic Syntheses procedures may be accessed either via the tables of contents of individual volumes ("journal mode") or by conducting structure and keyword searches ("database mode"). Requires free installation of the ChemDraw plugin from CambridgeSoft to perform structure searches.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Databases

Search graphical abstracts of databases indexing journals related to synthetic methods. Databases include Catalysts & Catalysed Reactions (2001-present), Methods in Organic Synthesis (1998-present), and Natural Product Updates (1998-present)

Selected Print Resources:

Large Multi-Volume Compilations

Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry
(Beilsteins Handbuch der organischen Chemie)

Multi-volume compilation including properties of organic compounds.

Volumes are stored with collective indexes in Hunter Hall Reading Room, 2nd Floor – QD 251 .B42. Covers the literature from the late-1700s (main work-Hauptwerk) until 1979 (5th supplementary series).

Volumes are in German until the 5th supplement, but relevant information can be found by non-German speakers.

Books entitled “How to Use Beilstein” and “Beilstein’s Index” (QD 291 .G53 1986 ) are also shelved with the Beilstein volumes in Hunter

Indiana University (Wiggins) has put together a useful Guide to the Printed Beilstein including a brief list of useful terms in German and English

Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry (Published as Gmelins Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie until 1981)

Multi-volume series covering inorganic and organometallic compounds (includes preparation information). Volumes are organized by element, and cumulative formula indexes are available. Incomplete holdings found in Hunter Hall Reading Room, 2nd Floor - QD 151 .G5.

Volumes published before 1982 are in German, though volumes since the 1950s may have English notes in the margins

Here is a link to a searchable PDF of the Gmelin Complete Catalog (1997-98, Springer)

Houben-Weyl (Methoden der Organischen Chemie)

Provides extensive experimental details for reactions. All methods are organized according to the class of compound or functional group to be synthesized. Volumes in German until 1990.

Cooper Library – QD 258 .M44, including indexes (“register”).

An online guide is available from the publishers to help you determine which volumes to look in.

Inorganic Synthesis   Available only in Hunter Hall Reading Room 2nd Floor - QD 151.A1 I5 (v.1 (1939)-v.12, v.14-v.34 (2004)), including a collective index for v.1-v.30 (later volumes have author, subject, formula, CAS indexes in the backs of the volumes).

Organic Reactions

Organized by reaction types. Later volumes contain cumulative indexes in the back, including author, chapter and topic indexes, and lists of chapter titles by volume.

Cooper Library - QD 251 .O68 v.1 (1942)-v.68 (2007)

Theilheimer's Synthetic Methods of Organic Chemistry (also Synthetische Methoden der organischen Chemie)   Available only in Hunter Hall Reading Room 2nd Floor – QD 262.T37 v.1 (1946)-v.71 (2007). Several cumulative indexes are available and shelved with the volumes in Hunter. Volumes in English .
