by faculty members may be placed "on reserve" for a semester
for use by students in their classes. These materials may be made available

Guidelines for Electronic Reserves
- Use 8 1/2 x
11 white paper only.
- Handwritten
items should be neatly printed in black ink. Originals always scan
better than a photocopy.
- Photocopied
items should be of the best possible quality. Light copies and items
with extremely small print do not scan well.
- Do not reduce
the size of the print on newspaper or magazine articles. Pages may
be enlarged.
- Copy only one
(1) page at a time. Do not copy double pages from a book.
- Any items longer
than 50 pages will be scanned in parts (ex. chapter 6 part a and
part b) for ease of viewing.
Copyright
Guidelines
The Guidelines
for Classroom Copying in Not-for-Profit Educational Institutions states, "A single copy may be made of any of the following by or for a
teacher at his or her individual request for his or her scholarly research
or use in teaching or preparation to teach a class: a chapter from a
book; an article from a periodical or newspaper; a short story, short
essay or short poem (whether or not from a collective work); a chart,
graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, periodical
or newspaper."
To comply with copyright law, one photocopy of a journal article or
a small portion of a book (no more than one chapter) may be placed on
reserve at the request of a faculty member. With written permission
from the copyright owner, additional copies may be placed on reserve,
and single or multiple copies may be carried over from one semester
to another.
Copyright permission will be secured by the reserve staff. Once copyright
permission has been requested, the item in question will be placed on
reserve and stamped with a notice of "COPYRIGHT PERMISSION PENDING".
The item will also be stamped "Copyright Permission Approved" when approval is received. Copyright permissions are valid for only
one semester.
Electronic
Reserves Guidelines
The electronic
reserves system is operated under the provisions for "Fair Use" in existing U.S. copyright law. All
materials placed on electronic reserves will be initiated by faculty,
solely for the non-commercial, educational use of students within the
guidelines of U.S. copyright law.
Under the provisions of "Fair Use", there are limits to what
materials can be placed on electronic reserve. A journal article or
a single chapter from a book is generally acceptable. Only a small portion
of the total reading requirements will be placed on reserve. There will
be no charge for access. Copyright notice will appear on all items indicating
that materials covered by copyright law have restrictions on additional
use.
Reserve staff are authorized to place materials in the "Library
Reserves" area for each course within the CLE (Collaborative Learning
Environment). These items are accessible on a read-only basis by the
instructor(s) of a course and the students enrolled in the course. All
materials will be removed at the end of each semester. All copyright
guidelines listed above apply to material placed on electronic reserve.
The electronic use of copyright-protected materials for library reserve
services is an area of the law that may be addressed by the courts or
by revisions to the copyright law. The Clemson University Libraries
reserve the right to change these guidelines to comply with copyright
law.
