Suggestions:
January - April 2006

Subject: Snax & Stax

Suggestion: The Canteen should serve cold beer. Preferably Budlight or Busch Light.
Response: Your comment was sent to ARAMark who manages the convenient store located in Cooper Library – Snax & Stax.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Computer Lab machines

Suggestion: Level 5 computer screens are horrible (East, I think are worse). Some are so blurry as to be useless.
Response: Your comment was sent to DCIT.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Smoking

Suggestion:“PLEASE provide more ashtrays & trash cans on the smoking side of the balcony!! I think this would cut back on the cig’s being thrown down!”
Response: Thanks – now that we added more umbrella tables, it certainly makes sense.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Vending

Suggestion:Vending Machines should sell raisinettes and peanut butter m&m’s! J”
Response:Your comment was sent to ARAMark who handles the campus vending machines.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Plants

Suggestion:Please add more plants! It made my visit here all the more enjoyable. As well, I felt more at home, and was able to concentrate more sufficiently. Great job with the addition.
Response:Thanks for the comments. I’ll make a budget request next fiscal year (July 1).
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Lighting

Suggestion: Please improve the lighting conditions in level 1 & 2.
Response: We hope to do just that. A group of graduate Ind. Eng. students are studying noise issues as well as lighting. The group will make recommendations to me & we hope to make changes or recommendations in the next year. Thanks for your input.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Elevators

Suggestion: The elevator didn’t work while wanting to go up from Level 2.
Response: Cooper Library’s elevators are 40 years old & are scheduled for major repair later this spring. Please be patient with us in the interim.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: General

Suggestion:Why do you only accept “Major Ideas?” My suggestion is that you also accept minor ideas.
Response:Of course we accept all ideas. The sign on the Suggestion Box is dated – we’ll consider a new one. Thanks.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Noise - Band

Suggestion: I was wondering why there is a band in the library. Isn’t the student center more appropriate? The library is supposed to be QUIET.”
Response:The Library is committed to the Midweek Music program and it is well received by the majority of patrons. For approximately thirty minutes one day per month, the lobby is filled with sound. This is a miniscule amount of time compared to the other 148 hours the library is open. We'll be happy to take your complaints under advisement and will certainly give consideration to the type of music. Thanks for the suggestions.
- Joseph F. Boykin, Jr., Dean of Libraries

Subject: Noise

Suggestion: A quiet area is badly needed some where on the 4th 5th, or 6th areas where no one meets & talks on their cell phones!
Response: Unfortunately, levels 1 – 3 are the available areas for “quiet”. We’re working with an Industrial Engineering graduate student project to study noise issues and hope to have some workable solutions by summer. Levels 4 – 6 are designated group study and collaboration areas and are by nature less quiet than the lower levels. We’re struggling to meet needs with a 40 year old structure and are happy to hear ways that we can improve! Thanks for your comment.

Subject: Hooks in Ladies Room

Suggestion: You need to install at least five BIG hooks in the 4th floor ladies room on wall across from toilet stalls. Big enough for coats & back packs together.
Response: Hooks are provided in two of the three stalls. I'm asking Facilities to add a hook in the third. While your idea is a super one (in a perfect world), from a security standpoint, it's unsafe. Your coats &
backpacks hanging out in the open is a "theft waiting to happen." Please use the hooks in the stalls. If you have other suggestions as to how we can improve, feel free to provide other comments. Thanks!

Subject: My Library Account

Suggestion: I have been a student here for years, even before the current id cards (I've got to say I was a big fan of the old cards with our birthdate on them, but that is a whole different department); that was many years of enjoying the library before some recent changes. I love the inside of the library; it is a great place to get work done, with different areas and floors that almost seem to be built for the various forms of schoolwork we encounter through our college careers (areas for group work, several computer labs, single study rooms, lounges, etc.). Unfortunately, the "My Library Account" section of the website, in my humble opinion, simply doesn't work as well as the old online access. Student access to information has been severely limited; we have multiple options to pay fines, but we can't even see what we actually owe anywhere near this section. Recently, and at my last check, the Tiger1 option hasn't been working (fortunately, I did get through and make the payment one day, but I am still uncertain whether it has actually registered in the system...so, eh?); as a senior, one of my only reasons for even keeping Tigerstripe money is to use it at the library. Third, I don't understand why we can't just sign in like we do for everything else, simply entering our username and password that is connected to a record of everthing we have ever done at this university. Last, but not least, it would be nice if we could access a complete record of the books we have checked out in the past, previous fines, and any other general information about what we have been getting into at the library; I would imagine that information is available somewhere. Thank you for your time; it was long, but I like to think they are all simple, easy areas that may be considered. Maybe the library could get better; is that even possible?
Response: Excellent suggestions! First: a coming feature – you will be able to use your computer userid to sign into the library system. Secondly, what level of detail are you looking for in fine records? In “your library account” you can now view the title, date checked out, date due & date returned plus amount of fine. Thirdly, we believe that we have solved the recent problems with the Tiger1 and credit card links. Please let us know what else we can do.

Subject: Newspapers

Suggestion:
The papers are not updated regularly.  Could you please keep the most recent date on the stand?
Response:Newspaper subscriptions are received by US mail & aren't as timely as we'd like.  We asked Greenville News and Anderson Independent to install newspaper machines on the Bridge in order to provide the local papers on a more timely basis.  Is there a particular title that was missing or out of date?  If you'll provide more information, we'll follow up.  Also many papers are now on-line.
- Gail Julian, Head of Acquisitions
Subject:Parking

Suggestion:
Think the school should build a small garage immediately adjacent to library, to improve studying conditions.
Response: Thanks for your suggestion. We're looking at options on how best to provide this service and hope to have something in place this summer.
- Geary Robinson, Director of Parking Services
Subject:Tax Room

Suggestion:The door to the tax room has been removed. I think it would be great if it were put back in.  Super great even. Thanks.
Response:Sorry for the inconvenience but there were security concerns related to the locked door; therefore it was removed and will not be replaced.
- Teri Alexander, Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Furniture

Suggestion:Put couches in the library!
Response: We'll consider when we have additional funding for furniture.  Thanks.
- Teri Alexander, Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Book Drop

Suggestion:It would be good if there is a drop box near Chemical Engineering Department.
Response:Since Earle Hall is located in close proximity to the drive-up book drop in the West Parking Lot of Cooper, we'd prefer not to add a box in that location but if you had other locations on campus?  We also have book drops located at the Hendrix Student Center and Holmes Hall.
- Teri Alexander, Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject:Facilities (Electrical, study space)

Suggestion:We need power strips, more plugs, and lots of big tables. NO DUMB CUBBIES!!  Thanks.
Response: Plugs we're working on - can't do power strips (fire code violation!).  Big tables, no cubbies.  For the present, we're stuck with the furnishings that we have.  Consider discussing your needs with your student representatives.  We do add furnishings as we have funding but we're quickly running out of public space!
