Suggestions:
January - April 2007

Subject: Mid-week Music

Suggestion: (1 of 4) It is my firm belief that Library=QUIET. Why is there live music in the entrance? Ever thought of the student center?
Response: During this month, Cooper Library celebrates the “Arts in April” by hosting musical performances in the main lobby for a thirty minute period on a weekly basis. Other months, the performances are hosted once per month. Given that Cooper is open 148 hours of 168 hours total, we feel that 30 minutes during the lunch period is appropriate. We apologize for the inconvenience but feel strongly that library patrons enjoy the brief respite from study and research.
- Kay Wall, Dean of Libraries
Subject: Vending Suggestion
Suggestion: Please put sunflower seeds in the vending machine, they are a great tool to stay awake but we can't get them late.
Response:We forwarded your suggestion to ARAMark who handles vending & they’ll respond. Look for the product in the machines.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Copy/Scan Machine
Suggestion: I am so excited about the copy machine that emails you pdfs of your files/xeroxes. Thank you thank you thank you!
Response:You are quite welcome. We hope to add this feature to more machines in the near future.
- Fredda Owens, Circulation Desk Manager
Subject: Clock

Suggestion: (1 of 2) Fix the Clock.
Response: As soon as we can find the clock that needs fixing, we will. Thanks!
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager
Subject: Duplexing on DCIT Printers

Suggestion: Why do the printers no longer have the ability to print on both sides of the paper?  This is an ability that a number of the printers on campus seemed to have lost recently.  For those of us who need to print out hundreds of power point slides for lectures, this results in an enormous loss of paper and space.
Response: The duplexers were removed because the parts were worn out and causing increasing jam problems in the printers.  There’s a feeling that the duplexing wasn’t used the majority of the time.  We’ve referred your question directly to DCIT.  Watch here for more information.
- Beth Helsel, Systems Librarian, 656-3039
Subject: Extension cords

Suggestion: (2) Extension cords that can be checked out.
Response:Extension cords are not allowed by the CU Fire Marshal. We are looking at costs and considering ways to improve the electrical situation. Please bear with us while we do.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Vending Machines

Suggestion: Lemonade in the vending machines for after hours. Or gatorade or powerade.
Response:Coke representatives have added new choices in the drink machines.  Check it out!
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager, 656-5172
Subject: Vending Machines

Suggestion: Please stock vending with juice drinks or Powerade. There is almost no place to get non-carbonated drinks in the library. Paw-Mart drinks are good but late at night when its not open you have to drink soda.
Response: We forwarded your request (and it’s a great one) to the staff in Campus Services. They will, in turn, work with Coke to make it happen.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager
Subject: Level 5 Computers

Suggestion: The internet explorer on the 5th floor computers always has an error about every 20 minutes & shuts down –I keep losing my research.
Response: This is the first we have heard of such problems.  This could be because of intermittent network problems but we will pass on this information to the Computer Center that manages the machines on Level 5.
- Beth Helsel, Systems Librarian
Subject: City Bus

Suggestion: Start informed city bus internet site.
Response: I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand the suggestion.  There is a website for Clemson Area Transit that includes information on the city bus routes and schedules. http://www.catbus.com/  I hope this helps.
- Beth Helsel, Systems Librarian
Subject: Furniture Level 5

Suggestion: Too many students have their dirty feet or shoes on the furniture. I’m afraid to even sit at the desk on the 5th floor, because of the dirt from the student’s shoes.
Response:I checked with the custodians and the furniture is wiped down daily. If you see evidence that this is not true, please let me know and I’ll follow up further.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager
Subject: Timeliness of newspaper

Suggestion: Please consider providing the Greenville News on a prompter & more consistent schedule.
Response: Many newspapers are delivered through the US Mail. It is beyond our control to determine when received. In an attempt to improve access, a couple of vendors placed newspaper machines near the front of Cooper Library. We’d like to improve but aren’t sure what we can do. If you have suggestions, please let us know.
- Gail Julian, Head of Acquisitions
Subject: Electrical for laptops (2)

Suggestion: I see about 2 laptops drop everyday because of the lack of power outlets.  Big fire hazard & not handicap friendly.  I can’t bring my laptop to the library because there’s no place to plug it in!
Response: There’s a potential plan to add electrical to Cooper.  Watch the library blog for more details.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager
Subject: NYT

Suggestion: I really liked having the free NY Times in the entrance of the library.  I thought it was a great resource for people who wanted to read the news.
Response: Student Government sponsored the free papers for a limited time.  Contact one of your senators for more information about this service.  Cooper Library was only a distribution point.
- Teri Alexander, Circulation & Facilities Manager
Subject: Printing

Suggestion: File system to sort printed papers of unknown printees. Papers tend to pile very disorganized and creates big paper waste.
Response: The printouts now contain a header sheet with the userid of the person who printed it. Unfortunately, people sometimes don't retrieve their printouts and papers start to accumulate. Having our Help Desk staff organize the printouts would take away from the time they have to help with computer problems. DCIT is considering different options for lab printing and perhaps they will find a solution.
- Beth Helsel, Systems Librarian
Subject: Resolution

Suggestion: Some of the computers are set to 1024 x 768 resolution even though the LCDs support 1280 x 1024.
Response: We have forwarded the request about the resolution to DCIT.
- Beth Helsel, Systems Librarian
Subject: Printing

Suggestion: More computers and more printers
Response: We have already asked DCIT to add an additional printer to the west side on Level 5 but we don't really have space to accommodate any more computers.
